Why structured solo time in nature is one of the most powerful experiences we offer, and how it supports self-discovery and inner clarity.
On day five of the expedition, each participant disperses to a solo site—a small area within shouting distance of the group, but offering complete solitude. They have water, a journal, their sleeping bag. No phone, no distractions, no companionship. Just 24 hours alone with themselves and the wild. For many, it is the most powerful experience of their lives.
The Purpose of Solo
Solo time has been a component of wilderness rites of passage across cultures for millennia. The vision quest, the walkabout, the pilgrimage—these traditions recognize that certain insights only emerge in solitude. Away from the input and influence of others, we can finally hear our own voice.
The first few hours of solo were the hardest of my life. I wanted to leave, to go back to camp. But I stayed. And by the second day, I felt this incredible peace. Like I finally met myself for the first time.

What Happens on Solo
The solo experience unfolds in predictable stages. First, discomfort—boredom, anxiety, resistance. Then, a period of sensory awakening—noticing details of the natural world with fresh attention. Next, emotional processing—feelings that have been avoided surface and demand attention. Finally, for many, a sense of peace and clarity emerges.
Participants often report that in solo, they finally process difficult experiences, gain clarity on important decisions, or simply rest in a way they never have before. The absence of distraction creates space for what matters to emerge.
Safety and Structure
Solo is not abandonment—it is structured solitude. Staff conduct regular check-ins, participants have whistles for emergencies, sites are carefully chosen for safety and proximity. The container allows surrender. Young people know they are held, even as they experience profound aloneness.
Integration and Return
The power of solo extends beyond the experience itself. Upon return to the group, participants share their experiences in council. They are witnessed, celebrated, welcomed back. The community honors their journey and helps them integrate their insights. This is the final piece—solitude followed by belonging, vision followed by sharing.
