As darkness falls, the group gathers in a circle around the fire. The flames cast dancing shadows on faces. Someone places a stone at the circle's center and lights a candle. The talking piece begins its journey around the circle. This is sacred time—when masks drop, truth emerges, and genuine connection becomes possible.

The Power of Being Witnessed

There is a particular magic that happens when someone truly listens to you. Not waiting for their turn to talk. Not planning their response. Not judging or advising. Just listening—with their whole attention, their whole heart. This quality of listening is increasingly rare in our fast-paced, distraction-filled world.

When I spoke in circle about losing my dad, everyone just listened. No one tried to fix it or tell me it would be okay. They just held space. It was the first time I felt like it was okay to not be okay.

What the Fire Teaches

Fire is alive—it breathes, consumes, transforms. It requires attention and care. It gives warmth and light but can also burn. Around the fire, we remember we are animal beings who have gathered in circles for hundreds of thousands of years. The fire connects us to something ancient and essential.

Fire also teaches about impermanence. Each flame arises and passes. Logs turn to ash. Nothing lasts. This awareness—that our time together is precious and fleeting—changes how we show up. We speak what matters. We don't waste words. We cherish this moment because we know it won't come again.

Creating the Container

The power of circle does not happen automatically. It requires intentional creation of safe space—clear agreements about confidentiality, respect for silence, and passing without pressure to share. It requires skilled facilitation that tracks energy, names what is happening, and intervenes when needed to protect the container.

Over time, as trust builds, circles deepen. Participants share more vulnerably, listen more fully, and take greater risks. By the end of a program, the circle holds stories of immense pain and beauty, and every person has been transformed by bearing witness.
